WHAT'S ACTUALLY CAUSING YOUR ACNE (AND WHY IT'S RARELY JUST ONE THING)
Acne is one of the most common skin concerns we see at Tachi Skin Care, and also one of the most misunderstood. Clients often come in having tried a dozen products, convinced something is fundamentally wrong with their skin. Most of the time, it's not that simple, and it's not that hopeless either.
Here's what's actually going on beneath the surface, and how we approach it.
Acne Isn't One Condition. It's a Combination of Factors.
At its core, acne happens when a few things line up at once:
- Excess oil production. Hormones tell your sebaceous glands to produce more oil than your pores can handle.
- Buildup inside the pore. Dead skin cells that don't shed properly mix with that oil and clog the follicle.
- Bacteria. A specific bacteria (C. acnes) thrives in clogged, oxygen-poor pores and triggers inflammation.
- Inflammation. Your immune system responds to that bacterial activity, which is what creates the redness, swelling, and tenderness we associate with a breakout.
Because multiple things are happening simultaneously, a single product rarely solves it. This is why the "just switch your cleanser" advice so often falls short. Effective treatment usually has to address oil, cell turnover, bacteria, and inflammation together, not one at a time.
Why Over-the-Counter Products Often Fall Short
Most drugstore acne products are formulated to be safe for the widest possible audience, which usually means the active ingredient concentrations are too low to make a real difference for moderate to persistent acne. On the other end, some people go too aggressive too fast, stripping the skin and damaging the barrier, which can actually make acne worse.
Professional-grade treatment lines, like Face Reality, are designed differently. They're built for estheticians to customize based on the way your specific acne presents, not a generic "acne skin type." That's a meaningful difference, and it's part of why we're Face Reality Certified Acne Specialists rather than generalists.
Common Myths Worth Retiring
"Acne means I'm not washing my face enough."
Over-washing is far more likely to be the problem. Stripping the skin barrier increases oil production and irritation.
"I just need to dry it out."
Dehydrated skin can actually produce more oil to compensate, and a damaged barrier struggles to heal. Hydration is part of a real acne protocol, not the enemy of it.
"If it's not gone in two weeks, the product isn't working."
Skin cell turnover takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks. Most acne protocols need at least one full cycle, often more, before you can accurately judge whether something is working.
"Diet is the whole story."
Diet can be a contributing factor for some people, but it's rarely the entire picture. Hormones, skincare habits, product buildup, and genetics all play a role too.
What a Real Acne Treatment Plan Looks Like
There's no single fix that works identically for everyone, which is exactly why we don't promise guaranteed timelines or results. What we can offer is a clear process:
1. A real assessment. Understanding your acne type (hormonal, congestion-based, inflammatory, or a mix) changes everything about the approach.
2. A customized product routine. Built around your skin's actual needs, not a generic "acne kit."
3. In-office treatments. Extractions, LED, and other modalities that support what you're doing at home.
4. Adjustments along the way. Skin changes, and your protocol should change with it.
This is what we mean when we talk about the acne journey rather than a guarantee. It's not a hedge. It's an honest reflection of how skin actually responds to treatment.
When to See a Specialist
If you've been consistent with a routine for 6 to 8 weeks without improvement, if breakouts are painful or cystic, or if you're seeing scarring or dark marks left behind, it's time to bring in a professional. The earlier inflammatory acne is addressed, the better the long-term outcome for your skin.
Clear skin is possible. It just usually takes a more thoughtful approach than most people have been given credit for.
