The Clearing Process
What the Middle of Acne Treatment Actually Feels Like (and Why It's Working)
There's a moment a few weeks into treatment that almost every client hits.
You've been showing up. You've been doing your home care every single night, even the nights you were too tired to look at your own reflection. And your skin still isn't where you want it to be. Maybe it's better. Maybe it's not obviously better yet. Maybe you had a great week and then, out of nowhere, a breakout that makes you want to cancel your plans and turn your camera off on the Zoom call.
If you're in that stretch right now, I want you to hear this clearly: that doesn't mean it isn't working.
The middle is the hardest part, and the least talked about
Everyone talks about the before. Everyone talks about the after. Almost nobody talks about the in-between: the weeks where you're doing everything right and your skin hasn't caught up to your effort yet. That gap is where most people give up on a plan that would have worked if they'd stayed with it.
It's also exactly why I don't give my clients a promised timeline. Not because I don't want to give you good news (I do, more than anything), but because your skin isn't a formula, and I'm not going to guarantee you something I can't control just to make you feel better for five minutes. What I can promise is that we build a real plan together, and I stay in it with you through the parts that are slow.
What's actually happening during acne treatment visits
During the active clearing phase, we see each other every two weeks. That's not arbitrary. It's how long your skin needs between treatments to actually respond, without over-treating it and setting you back. As your skin stabilizes, we space out to monthly maintenance.
Here's something people don't always know: whatever your skin needs in that appointment, you get. If it needs an LED treatment added, or more extraction time, or less, that's not an upsell. It's just what's already included. You paid for that time, and all of it belongs to you. Nobody should be sold to while they're lying on the table, vulnerable, trusting you to take care of them. That's not how I was trained to think about skin, and it's not how I think about people.
Life gets in the way sometimes. That's allowed.
Biweekly visits are the plan, not a test. Some months that's easy. Some months work is chaotic or your kid is sick or you just can't make it in, and the visits get further apart than either of us would like. That doesn't mean you've fallen off, and it doesn't mean I've given up on you.
Anybody that wants my help and shows up, I will show up for them too.
You're allowed to trust the process even when you can't see it working yet
"I went to her with the worst skin of my life and now have the best skin I've ever had... she has let me cry, listened to my frustrations and is a genuinely kind person who really cares about her clients." That's a real client, Erin, in her own words.
Another client, Loany, put it this way: "Before coming here I was insecure about my skin and did not know what to buy, use, etc... This is the most confident I haven't felt with my skin in a long time."
Neither of them got there in a straight line. Nobody does. There were weeks in the middle that felt like nothing was happening. It was.
Where this actually starts
If you're reading this because you're in the frustrating middle of your own skin story, or you haven't started yet and you're scared the middle will be too hard to get through, that's exactly what a consultation at Tachi Skin Care, here in Portland's Alberta Arts district, is for. Not to promise you a date your skin will be clear, but to build a plan that's actually yours, and to be honest with you about what the road looks like before you're on it.
This is the promise I keep coming back to, because it's the whole reason I do this work: you can come in as you are. You are safe here. And I will take care of you, guide you with love and with knowledge.
